[Review] Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia
I absolutely loved Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia. Filled to the brim with intrigue, suspense, and just a hint of romance, Mexican Gothic was beautifully done from start to finish.
When Noemí's cousin Catalina begins sending weird letters back home, Noemí travels from Mexico City to High Place, the manor Catalina now calls home. But things at High Place are obviously not what they seem. With a sordid history and a failed silver mine to their name, the English-speaking Doyle family leaves far more questions than answers in Noemí's mind. Intending to rescue her cousin and leave, Noemí finds her world upside down when she enters High Place. Filled with deep secrets, a vile history, and dark suspense, High Place might've let her enter but its secrets won't let her leave.
The story of Mexican Gothic pulled me in with its intrigue from the very first chapter, and much like High Place, wouldn't let me leave. The gothic feel persisted throughout the entire novel, and the horrors of High Place were almost tangible they were so well done. I loved every character, especially the personality and life Moreno-Garcia gave each one - even the villains. Mexican Gothic was an extremely well-done tale, and I would love the chance to revisit Noemí's world again one day.
