--------------------

Chance is the second book in Wendy Rathbone’s Captive Alpha’s series. In this society, Omegas like Chance are forced to give birth to as many children as time permits in order to keep the population from dying out. He’s inseminated in a lab, and never gets to meet his children. It’s a cold living, but not as bad as the Alphas who are kept in cells, hidden away, and only used for their reproduction potential. But then Chance is in an accident and meets Keer. Suddenly, the life Chance knew is turned upside down and he finds out his life doesn’t have to be so cold after all, especially if he’s in Keer’s arms.

I thought Chance was a great addition to the Captive Alpha’s series. While taking place in the same omegaverse and involving the same Alpha/Omega dynamic, Rathbone puts the main characters through vastly different situations. And while technically not a standalone, I would say it’s not necessary to read the first book in the series if you want to jump straight to Chance. Rathbone definitely explains enough about her omegaverse to understand what’s going on without having the knowledge from the first book. I loved how Chance and Keer played off of each other. The idea that they’re each other’s soulbound mates was hinted at and then just sort of accepted; I would have liked to see more exploration of that on both sides. I think I would have also liked to see some sort of conflict between Chance and Keer. As it was, all perceived conflict was sort of outside their little relationship bubble, and they really found their happily ever after without too many obstacles. The writing and plot were well done, though, so if you’re looking for an omegaverse mpreg featuring a couple that gets to their happily ever after without too much mess or fuss, Chance would be a great read for you. Minus the lack of any really big conflict, I liked Chance and Keer’s journey, both with each other and with how they dealt with the issues of their world.
