[ARC Review] Enemy Heir by Nana Malone & Carrie Ann Ryan

In Enemy Heir, the second book in the Tattered Royals series by Nana Malone and Carrie Ann Ryan, readers return to the sovereign island nation of Alden where Prince Breck Waterford, no longer the spare and now next in line for the throne, is about to meet his match.

As a public figure, a prince no less, Breck is used to living in the lime light. The public sees him as a playboy prince, not a care in the world and a new girl every night. And Breck is fine with that public persona as long as it means no one knows about all the techy stuff he really does. He especially doesn't want new-relocated security team member Sparrow to see who he truly is, because he might just fall for her if he doesn't keep his distance. Sparrow can't abide by jerks, and Prince Breck tops that list. But when the past comes back to haunt her, Breck and his true nature might be the only ones who can save her. And when the walls come down between Breck and Sparrow, all bets are off on who will fall for the other first.

Enemy Heir was full of action and spice, and I really enjoyed this whole story. I honestly wasn't expecting the amount of action that actually took place in this story. Enemy Heir was definitely more than a bad boy/royal romance; the main characters were equally (and surprisingly) able to hold their own in a physical fight, and I was rooting for Sparrow's strong, independent nature. Breck was an interesting character, as he was much more than just a playboy; I was actually impressed with his tech finesse and would have loved to see more of that in action.

While I thought Breck and Sparrow's romance was spicy, it almost seemed like too much too soon. It almost seemed like they went from loathsome enemies to more than friends in just a few short pages, and I had a hard time believing they both changed their tune that quickly. I loved the two of them together, but it felt like most of their relationship building centered around them trying to convince themselves that they shouldn't be together. They went from zero to ten very quickly, and I would have loved to see more scenes with them getting closer to each other. Sparrow might have been the one to tie down the wild prince, but I wish we could've seen more of how that came about. I loved all the action scenes, especially how well they showcased Sparrow's bravery and strength, but I think there was room for more relationship building as well to balance out both characters' growth.

Overall, I enjoyed Enemy Heir. The action and spice pulled me in, and Sparrow and Breck were strong lead characters. While this book could be read without reading the first in the series, there were quite a bit of references to Royal Line that might not make sense to readers who haven't read the first in the series.
