[ARC Review] Sweet Mercy by Amelia Wilde
To be completely truthful, I didn't really care much for Emerson at the end of Dark Reign. I thought he had crossed a few too many lines in his attempt to gain Daphne for himself. However, that was only a small part of Emerson's story, and while some people might not be so quick to forgive him, I found him to be a much more complex and complicated character than I originally judged him to be in the first book. He's by no means a perfect gentleman in Sweet Mercy, but he's no longer the dark, unforgiving man he seemed to be in the previous book and I really enjoyed getting to explore that side of him.
Likewise, Daphne really surprised me in this second installment. With the way things ended in the first book, I figured Daphne had quite a dark journey ahead of her - and she absolutely did. But Daphne responded to her situation in ways that I didn't anticipate and she grew so much as a character in the process. Will Daphne's journey be for everyone? Probably not. But will it grab the attention of dark romance lovers? Absolutely.
I loved Wilde's writing style and narration. With the dual point of views, the tension was often front and center and I ended up finding it hard to put this book down; I needed to know how the other person was internally dealing with the action of the previous chapter. Neither character responded to their situation the way I expected them to, even as more and more of their personality was revealed, and I loved that Wilde could keep me on my toes right to the very end. At the end of Dark Reign I wasn't sure I would like where Emerson and Daphne's journey was going, but after reading Sweet Mercy, I absolutely cannot wait to see what's next for these two. Sweet Mercy is dark romance at its finest.
