[Review] Drop, Cover, and Hold On by Jasmine Guillory
PUBLISHER'S SYNOPSIS: It takes nothing less than a fateful natural disaster to throw two opposites together in a ground-shakingly charming short story by the New York Times bestselling author of Drunk on Love.
This Valentine’s Day, Daisy Murray has her heart set on binge-watching rom-coms. Instead, an earthquake traps her inside a bakery with its impossibly rude and insufferably handsome owner and head baker. They already have a history: she’s always smiled, he’s always scowled. Where better to finally get to know each other than amid the disaster? Then again, they have no choice. Besides, it could have its sweet, undeniable, and unpredictable perks.

MY THOUGHTS: While Drop, Cover, and Hold On isn't one of my favorite novellas from the Improbable Meet-Cute collection, this one was still a cute grumpy/sunshine, forced proximity romance that had great diversity and plenty of food references to make anyone's sweet tooth beg for more.
While Daisy and Harris are not my favorite couple from this collection, I did still enjoy their dynamic. I especially loved the way Harris was quietly flirting with Daisy the whole time. It was so subtle, a gesture here and a look there, that Daisy couldn't see what was happening in front of her own face. Personally, I love seeing the small, intimate motions over the loud, in-your-face declarations, so Harris was definitely my kind of main character.
I love Jasmine Guillory's writing. She just has a way of crafting scenes that makes it easy for me to visualize everything and everybody on the page. I was definitely craving sweet, baked goods by the end of this novella, and not every writer can affect me that way.
Maybe I was just looking for more to happen between Daisy and Harris before they realized they were falling for each other, but this novella just felt like it was lacking something for me. It was very much still a four out of five stars for me, but something was just missing for me to rate it higher than that.
